Why B: Solid protection, strong reviews and a 60-day refund window on new plans, but first-year discounts of up to half make renewal bills much larger than the price that sold you.

What the research shows

  1. Every multi-device plan is sold at an introductory first-year price: Standard is billed $47.93 for year one and renews at $59.99, Ultimate $139.99 then $279.99.
  2. The 60-day money-back guarantee covers new direct purchases only; the EULA excludes renewals and the Personal Data Remover, which is bundled in Ultimate.
  3. The free version is a cleanup scanner only. Real-time, ransomware, exploit and phishing protection all require a paid plan.
  4. Trustpilot shows 4.5 'Excellent' from roughly 5,900 reviews; Malwarebytes invites customers to review and replies to most negative ones.

What Malwarebytes sells

Malwarebytes is a privately held security company from Santa Clara, California, founded in 2008 by Marcin Kleczynski, that made its name with a free scanner people ran after their regular antivirus had missed something. Today it sells full real-time protection for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS in three consumer tiers. Standard covers antivirus, ransomware and exploit protection, a scam and ad blocker and Scam Guard, an AI scam-checking assistant. Plus adds Privacy VPN. Ultimate adds identity monitoring, credit monitoring, identity theft insurance and a personal data remover. Each comes in Individual and Family versions. The free scanner and the Browser Guard extension remain, and a Teams line serves small businesses. It suits people who want light, unobtrusive protection and will watch the renewal date.

Product by product

6 items. Each chip is a per-product call and can differ from the brand verdict.

Standard BUY

The core plan: real-time protection against malware, ransomware and exploits, safe browsing with a scam and ad blocker, and Scam Guard, for three devices across Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. It is billed $47.93 for the first year and renews at $59.99 a year; the pricing page advertises it as $3.99 a month, which is the first-year figure divided by 12. A single-device Standard plan is listed at $44.99 a year, only a few dollars less for one device instead of three. The 60-day guarantee makes trying it low-risk. Turn off auto-renewal in MyAccount if you plan to shop around next year.

WeaknessRenewal price is a quarter higher than the first year

Plus CONSIDER

Standard plus Privacy VPN for three devices, billed $55.99 in the first year and renewing at $79.99 a year. The VPN is a credible product rather than a bolt-on: WireGuard only, 150+ servers in 60+ locations on hardware Malwarebytes owns through AzireVPN, RAM-only servers and a 2026 independent infrastructure audit referenced on the VPN page. The problem is the renewal step, which is larger than Standard’s, and the fact that three devices is tight for a VPN. If you already pay for a VPN, Standard is the better buy. If you do not, this is a reasonable bundle.

StrengthAudited, owned-infrastructure VPN bundled with antivirus
WeaknessRenews 43 percent above the first-year price; only three devices

Ultimate SKIP

Everything in Plus, plus identity and credit monitoring, up to $2 million in identity theft insurance and an online personal data remover, for one adult on three devices. The pricing page shows $139.99 for the first year, discounted by half from a $279.99 list price, and that $279.99 is what renewal costs. Two details argue against it. The EULA excludes Personal Data Removal purchases from the 60-day money-back guarantee, so part of the bundle is not covered by the headline refund promise. And the identity page does not say which countries the monitoring and insurance cover. Buy Standard and a dedicated identity service only if you need one.

StrengthOne bill for antivirus, VPN and identity monitoring
WeaknessDoubles at renewal; data remover excluded from the 60-day guarantee

Standard Family BUY

Standard’s protection on up to 10 devices, billed $95.99 for the first year and renewing at $119.99 a year, roughly $12 per device at the renewal price. For a household with a mix of Windows laptops, Macs and phones this is the best value on the price list, and the step-up at renewal is the smallest proportional jump among the family tiers. The Plus Family version adds a no-log VPN for $104.99 in year one, renewing at $149.99. Exact features vary by operating system, as the pricing page notes, so check what your phones and tablets actually receive before counting them.

Malwarebytes Free CONSIDER

The product that built the brand. Malwarebytes describes it as a cleanup tool that finds and removes infections already on your device; it scans on demand and does not stop threats arriving. Real-time protection, ransomware and exploit protection and malicious-site blocking all sit in the paid tiers. As a second-opinion scanner beside Windows Security it is excellent and costs nothing. As your only protection it is not enough, because nothing runs between scans. Keep it for occasional scans if you rely on Microsoft’s built-in protection.

StrengthFree, effective second-opinion scanner and cleanup tool
WeaknessNo real-time protection; scans only when you run them

Browser Guard BUY

A free extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari that blocks malicious sites, phishing, ads, trackers, credit-card skimmers and cookie-consent banners, with allow lists and a content-control list for blocking chosen domains. It works without a paid plan, and a premium tier links to Malwarebytes subscriptions. The product page does not lay out clearly which features are free and which are premium, so expect some prompts. For anyone not running a dedicated ad blocker it is an easy addition. It overlaps with uBlock Origin for those who already have it.

StrengthFree phishing and skimmer blocking in all major browsers
WeaknessFree versus premium feature split is unclear on the page

Watch-outs

  • First-year prices are discounts of 20 to 50 percent against a struck-through list price, and every plan renews at the full list price. Ultimate’s bill doubles in year two.
  • The monthly figures on the pricing page are the first-year price divided by 12, not what you pay after renewal.
  • The 60-day guarantee does not cover renewals or the Personal Data Remover, so letting a plan auto-renew is a commitment for the year.
  • Malwarebytes asks customers to leave Trustpilot reviews, which tends to lift scores; the recent negative reviews concern renewals and account confusion.

Sentiment from reviews

Trustpilot rates Malwarebytes 4.5 'Excellent' at the time of reading from close to 6,000 reviews, a large share of them five stars. The profile notes that the company invites customers to review, which usually lifts a score, and that it replies to most negative reviews within a week. Praise is consistent: fast, clear help from support agents, malware or adware caught after another product missed it, and long-term customers who have renewed for a decade or more.

The complaints are about account administration rather than detection. Recent reviewers describe confusion during renewal, being told a subscription was cancelled when it had renewed, trouble adding iPhones and iPads to a plan, too many marketing emails, and phone support that has been replaced by text. A smaller group simply cannot reach a person when they need one.

Alternatives

Bitdefender

Pick this if you want consistently top independent lab scores and more features per dollar.

Microsoft Defender

Pick this if you use Windows, browse carefully and want built-in protection that costs nothing.

ESET

Pick this if you want a light, configurable antivirus with fewer bundled extras to pay for.

Final call

Malwarebytes is good protection from a company customers broadly like, and the 60-day refund window on new plans is more generous than most rivals offer. The catch is the pricing structure. Every headline price is a first-year introductory rate, and the renewal can be up to double. Standard or Standard Family at the renewal price is still fair; Ultimate is not. Put the renewal date in your calendar and decide then. Verdict: CONSIDER.

Brand verdict: CONSIDER 7.6/10, grade B.
